With so many people and animals needing help, it’s often difficult to decide who to help first. For us at Alovia, our focus is dogs and cats. Why? Because animals have always called to us. And pets are where we find our comfort, but unfortunately the cats and dogs that aren’t currently pets are often forgotten. So once we decided who we were going to help, we had to decide whether to start local or global.
As my business partner and I are both from Canada, but live on opposite sides of the country, BC and Ontario, we decided that local to us would just have to mean Canada as a whole. We also decided that, with as much effort as possible, the manufacturing of our products, right down to the labels and business cards would be produced in Canada. We found a wonderful lady in Sarnia, Ontario (our home town) to sew our purses, and a fabulous man in Revelstoke, BC to screen print our designs. A great business relationship was built when we found a printer in Toronto who could provide FSC paper for all our tagging and label needs. And of course, all at a great price to help keep costs down so that the maximum amount could be donated to the charity of choice.
So why did we decide to choose to stay local for our production needs? There are the practical reasons: speedy delivery, ease of taxes and no language barriers. But there is also the desire to give back to the little guy who is trying to survive out there, doing what they love, just like us. They are our fellow neighbours and personal friends, who also have a dream. It’s a great feeling to sit down with your designer or printer, explain what you’re looking for, and see the light in their eyes shine through because they are as excited as you are to see the project come alive.
We stand proud at the quality of work being done and also in knowing that dreams can be reached one connection at a time.
